Infrastructure investments to create jobs and get the economy moving
Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud, on behalf of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs Minister Bill Hutchinson, with federal Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville Garry Breitkreuz today announced that the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have approved funding for a multiplex in Melville under the first intake of the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund.
This new multiplex will create jobs, stimulate the economy and improve sport and culture infrastructure.
"The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes that multi-purpose facilities are at the heart of every community in our great province," Bjornerud said. "Investment in this multiplex will support Melville by creating more jobs and providing a better place for families to be active in their community."
"The Government of Canada recognizes that infrastructure investments are essential to stimulating the economy and creating jobs," said Breitkreuz. "This multiplex is a fine example of how we are supporting modern infrastructure that encourages greener, healthier and more active communities."
The multiplex facility will benefit the City of Melville and surrounding rural communities. It will include an ice surface, convention centre, family fitness centre, cardiac care centre, seniors centre and walking track.
Canada's contribution to the multiplex is sourced from the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund. Under the first intake, Melville will receive a joint federal and provincial investment of $16.3 million for the construction of the multiplex. The total projected cost of the multiplex is $24.5 million. The Communities Component supports the infrastructure needs of communities of less than 100,000.
These investments are part of the Government of Canada's and Province of Saskatchewan's commitment to help stimulate the economy, maintain stability and keep Saskatchewan working during the economic downturn. Under the Building Canada plan, the Government of Canada will be investing more than $755.2 million in infrastructure in Saskatchewan between 2007 and 2014.
