Security at the Saskatoon Court of Queen's Bench building will be upgraded and expanded so it can house all court services, according to plans unveiled today. Five million dollars has been allocated for the first year of the three year renovation and expansion project.
"The additional space and enhancements to security are essential," Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan said. "Services are currently split between two buildings, with the courthouse on Spadina Crescent housing the Court of Queen's Bench and the visiting Court of Appeal. Meanwhile, the Family Law Division is in the First Nations Bank building about two blocks away."
In addition to the expansion, perimeter security is scheduled to be up and running at the courthouse by the end of May. This will help ensure the safety of all judiciary, staff and other court participants.
The expansion to the Saskatoon Court of Queen's Bench is part of the government's plan to help ensure safer and more secure Saskatchewan communities, while also improving the efficiency of courthouses. This project is just one of many initiatives the government is implementing to address the need for space and security in Saskatchewan courthouses. In February, the government announced plans for a new courthouse in Meadow Lake. Earlier this year, perimeter security was implemented at the courthouses in Regina, Prince Albert Provincial Court, Saskatoon Provincial Court and Saskatoon Family Law Division.
