The province has officially proclaimed the month of May 2009 to be Museum Month in Saskatchewan.
"This month will be a great opportunity to build awareness of the rich and diverse heritage of Saskatchewan people and communities," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "With more than 200 organizations, including museums, art galleries, parks, historic sites, interpretive centres and cultural centres, the Province of Saskatchewan has more communities that support museums, per capita, than any other province in Canada."
Museums provide an exception to today's focus on electronic reproduction and distribution technologies. Museums continue to offer precious product; the opportunity to experience nature, art, technology and history of the world.
"The Museums Association of Saskatchewan appreciates the government's focus on heritage issues, as Saskatchewan's profile on the national stage and population continues to grow," Museums Association of Saskatchewan Executive Director Brenda Sherring said. "Newcomers recognize that our province and its people value our history. They want to be a part of celebrating that history, and want to add their own unique stories to the province's heritage tapestry. We see this proclamation as a good step in bringing our province's heritage network and opportunities into the spotlight in the future."
Museum Month coincides with the busy spring season in Saskatchewan's museums and includes International Museum Day which has been celebrated all over the world on or about May 18 each year since 1977.
