Premier Brad Wall presented the Saskatchewan Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Ronald Cavell, Professor Emeritus from the University of Alberta at Government House in Regina today.
The Saskatchewan Distinguished Service Award recognizes non-residents of the province who have made outstanding contributions to Saskatchewan and the development of the provincial economy, culture and society.
A chemistry professor, Cavell is a supervisor of X-ray Spectroscopy Projects, Alberta Synchrotron Institute and served as president of the Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation from 1999-2006. He was also a founding member of the board of directors for the Canadian Light Source, one of the world's most advanced synchrotron facilities, located at the University of Saskatchewan.
"For 20 years Dr. Cavell's contributions and efforts have advanced research and development in Saskatchewan and will continue to do so well into the future," Wall said. "His vision, leadership and commitment to the Canadian Light Source has made Saskatchewan the home of first class discovery and innovation that will serve not only our province or our country, but people on a global scale."
Nominations for the Distinguished Service Award may be proposed by any ministry, agency or Crown corporation of the Government of Saskatchewan, or authority in which the government is a direct partner. Including today's recipient, 22 non-residents have received the award since its inception in 1997.
