Released on March 20, 2009
This Sunday, Swift Current welcomes the Regina Symphony Orchestra (RSO) for a concert of orchestral music on the first stop of the RSO Music on the Road Centennial Tour. The RSO will perform its popular "The Oscars" Concert with music from Academy Award nominated films on March 22 at 2 p.m. in the Sky Centre performing arts centre at the new Living Sky Casino.
The Regina Symphony is the first recipient of funding from the Building Pride program, which was announced in January 2009. The orchestra is receiving $200,000 for a centennial tour of three southern Saskatchewan cities. Besides bringing the opportunity of attending a live symphony performance to people in smaller centres and surrounding areas, it is hoped the tour will build audiences for orchestral music around the province.
"For 100 years, the Regina Symphony Orchestra has been one of this province's artistic treasures," Premier Brad Wall said. "I am excited that through the Building Pride program they are bringing one of their most popular concerts to Swift Current and performing it in a beautiful new venue."
In addition to the performance in Swift Current, the RSO will play concerts in Estevan on April 5 and Yorkton on April 23.
"I am pleased we've been able to make it possible for the RSO to take their show on the road in this their centennial year," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "The RSO is the first recipient of funding under the Building Pride pilot program and a great way to start what I hope will be a dynamic program of sharing what is unique about this province."
The RSO describes the Swift Current concert as including the movie music with scenes set by Maestro Victor Sawa, and opportunities to place silent bids on collectible movie posters. The RSO is also encouraging people to come to the concert dressed as their favourite movie star or character, or "red carpet" glamorous.
