The Ministry of Health is providing the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region with $450,000 to move forward with capital planning and defining project scope at the Prince Albert Victoria Hospital and another $300,000 for renovations to accommodate increased patient volumes at the facility.
"This is a much needed step forward for the City of Prince Albert," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister and Prince Albert Carlton MLA Darryl Hickie said. "This injection of funds provides the region the go ahead they've been waiting for to begin planning for a new hospital. This was a top priority for the government and they are providing the dollars to back it up."
The Prince Albert Victoria Hospital is a major referral centre for health care services for residents of northern Saskatchewan.
"We are very pleased to be able to move forward with planning for the future use of Victoria Hospital," Prince Albert Parkland RHA board chair Gord Dobrowolsky said. "The increasing number of patients from central and northern Saskatchewan has put significant pressure not only on our dedicated staff and physicians, but also the physical capacity of the building. The Prince Albert Parkland Regional Health Authority appreciates the support to make some immediate renovations, which will assist our staff in providing quality, safe care."
This funding is in addition to the $5.2 million announced last week to cover increased staffing costs due to increasingly heavy demand for health services this year and the health region's 2008-09 allocation of $129.8 million from the Ministry of Health.
Prince Albert Parkland Health Region provides services and programs to more than 77,000 people in one city, and 40 towns, villages and rural municipalities, as well as 12 First Nations.
