MANKOTA-AREA MAN FINED $116,200 FOR ILLEGAL HUNTING AND OUTFITTING

Released on March 12, 2009

A Mankota-area man pleaded guilty to two counts under The Natural Resources Act and The Wildlife Act and Regulations and was fined $116,200 in Swift Current Provincial Court.

Scott Cowie was convicted of unlawfully hunting and acting as an outfitter without an outfitter's licence. In addition to the fines, Cowie has been ordered to pay $25,200 restitution to three individuals who had paid money assuming that the hunts were legal and to make a donation of $5,000 to the SASKTIP Reward program. He was also given a five-year hunting licence suspension.

The charges were laid as the result of a two-year investigation by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment. All illegal wildlife seized in the case was ordered forfeited to the Crown.

"Illegal hunting and outfitting robs the people of Saskatchewan of the benefits of our natural resources and the provincial government will take whatever action is necessary to ensure those who abuse the resource are prosecuted," Ministry of Environment Compliance and Field Services Executive Director Kevin Callele said. "We are pleased that the courts have agreed and imposed this significant penalty. I am confident that it will send the message that Saskatchewan's fish and wildlife resource is valued and will be protected."

Anyone who is aware of or suspects wildlife, fisheries or environmental violations is encouraged to report them to the nearest Ministry of Environment office or to call the province's toll-free Turn In Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 for SaskTel cell phone subscribers.
