YORKTON IS HOME OF THE 2009 CANADA CUP OF CURLING

Released on March 11, 2009

The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to contribute $50,000 to the Canadian Curling Association for the 2009 Canada Cup of Curling championship taking place on March 18-22, 2009 at Yorkton's Gallagher Centre. This is the first time the Canada Cup of Curling has been held in Saskatchewan.

"Improving tourism initiatives and supporting our athletes is a government priority," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Championships such as this demonstrate how capable Saskatchewan communities are at hosting premiere events. They engage volunteers from all walks of life, build pride and promote Saskatchewan."

The Canada Cup features the best male and female curlers in Canada.

"Not only is it a large purse on the line, but also all important points toward a spot in the 2009 Canadian Curling Trials," Canadian Curling Association Director of Event Operations and Media Relations Warren Hansen said. "The City of Yorkton is a perfect site for this event and we know they will be an excellent host."

The winners from the 2009 Canada Cup become part of the pool of 16 men's and 16 women's teams eligible for the 2009 Tim Hortons Canadian Curling Trials "The Roar of the Rings". The Trials will determine Canada's representatives for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

"This will be an event that truly puts Yorkton on the map," Yorkton Mayor Chris Wyatt said. "Yorkton has never hosted so many elite athletes at one time in one tournament. The Canada Cup of Curling is one of the most exciting weeks of curling and we are honoured to have the opportunity to showcase our great city. We look forward to showing the country why Saskatchewan is the place to be and Yorkton is the city "Where Good Things Happen!"
