PROVINCE HELPS PRAIRIE NORTH HEALTH REGION COVER COST OF INCREASED SERVICES

Released on March 11, 2009

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing Prairie North Health Region with an additional $722,000 to cover Saskatchewan's portion of costs for service expansions in Lloydminster.

The funding is in addition to the health region's 2008-09 total budget allocation of $135 million from the Ministry of Health.

Local population growth and a mini-baby-boom has put pressure on health services in the region. Babies delivered in the health region increased from 1,448 to 1,826 from 2003-04 to 2007-08. Day surgeries, hospital stays and lab tests continue to rise in numbers. The health region added 10 acute care beds to Lloydminster hospital in February, to help meet demand.

"When it comes to the health of residents, our government takes its responsibility to ensure the delivery of health care very seriously," Lloydminster MLA Tim McMillan said. "This funding will allow the health region to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population," McMillan said. "By investing in health care, our government is taking the necessary steps to ensure Saskatchewan remains strong and steady."

"Our government is committed to ensuring Saskatchewan people receive safe, quality health care," Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison said. "Today's announcement supports the expansion of needed health care services for people in Prairie North Health Region."

"Prairie North Health Region is delighted to receive funding assistance for program and service expansion in Lloydminster, to meet the needs of the community and area's rapidly growing population," Prairie North Health Region CEO David Fan said.

Prairie North Health Region provides services and programs to over 72,000 residents of northwest central Saskatchewan from The Battlefords and Meadow Lake, to the Alberta border. The Region also provides health services for more than 17,000 residents on the Alberta side of Lloydminster and area. The health region employs over 2,900 staff and manages 26 facilities and sites.
