ARTHON CONSTRUCTION LTD. PLEADS GUILTY TO OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY VIOLATION

Arthon Construction Ltd. pled guilty to two charges and was fined a total of $11,200 after violating occupational health and safety legislation that could have prevented a work-related injury.

The charges follow an incident on November 7, 2007, when an employee was seriously injured by a rock crusher that was left running without an operator at the Regina Landfill.

Occupational Health and Safety investigated this incident and concluded that the failure of the company to comply with certain provisions of The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and regulations contributed to the injury of the worker.

On June 24, 2009, Arthon Construction Ltd. pled guilty to contravening section 136 (1) and 137 (2) of the regulations after the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General laid charges against the company. Five other charges were stayed by the Crown.

Occupational Health and Safety inspects approximately 4,000 workplaces annually and provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities.
