“RISING STATE LEADERS” TO VISIT SASKATCHEWAN

A group of promising U.S. state leaders will visit Saskatchewan on June 25 to learn more about the province's robust economy.

The "Rising State Leaders" program is an annual event organized by the Canadian Embassy in Washington and is designed to provide outstanding state leaders with a deeper understanding of the Canada-U.S. relationship, and foster relations between leaders in the two nations.

This year, the program will target Western Canada. In addition to a stop in Saskatoon, participants will visit Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Fort McMurray, Banff and Vancouver.

"We welcome this delegation to our province and I expect they will find their visit enlightening," Advanced Education and Employment Minister Rob Norris said. "We've worked hard to tell the Saskatchewan story in the United States, and are glad to have the opportunity to do so again with this influential group of up-and-coming state politicians."

Participants include a bi-partisan group of state legislators (assemblymen, senators and representatives) from Nevada, Washington, Alabama, Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Rising State Leaders participants are chosen and nominated by the Canadian Embassy and Canadian Consulates General.

During their time in Saskatchewan, they will have a very full schedule, with presentations and tours regarding:

  • Saskatchewan's innovation, science and research and technology initiatives;
  • Saskatchewan's uranium industry;
  • Saskatchewan's potash industry;
  • The Canadian Light Source Synchrotron;
  • The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO); and
  • Alternative energy research.

The U.S. delegation will also attend a dinner hosted by Minister Norris.

"This visit is a great chance for us to raise the profile of our province with an important group of elected officials from different parts of the United States - our ally and largest trading partner," Norris said. "Breaking bread together will give us a chance to build relationships with our American colleagues and lead to more opportunities to work together in the future."
