A Habitat for Humanity partner family achieved their dream of homeownership after receiving a key to their new house at a presentation held in Regina today. The affordable housing project was undertaken by the Regina affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, with $50,000 in funding from the province to offset construction costs.
The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced on March 30 to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates in providing 20 homes for lower-income Saskatchewan families in housing need. The homes will be constructed in Yorkton, Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Lloydminster.
"Our government believes that everybody in this great province deserves to have a safe, affordable home to call their own," Regina Qu'Appelle Valley MLA Laura Ross said, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. "Our government is pleased to partner with Habitat for Humanity to build not just homes, but better and brighter futures for Saskatchewan families."
"Words cannot express how wonderfully gratifying it is to make the dream of home ownership a reality for this happy family," Habitat for Humanity Regina Inc. CEO Dennis Coutts said. "We have fulfilled our mission in mobilizing volunteers and community partners to provide an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and enrich our community's future in this family. We share the convictions of the province - everybody deserves a safe, affordable place to call home."
The single family home is located at 704 Athol Street in Regina. The partner family contributed 500 hours of sweat equity in building the home and other Habitat for Humanity Regina homes.
