PROPOSED CANADA-EU ECONOMIC AGREEMENT DISCUSSED AT WORKSHOP IN REGINA

On Tuesday, June 9, there will be a public workshop on a proposed comprehensive economic agreement between Canada and the European Union (EU).

The workshop is organized by the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Canada, on behalf of the European Commission (EC). Participants will include senior EC officials, Saskatchewan officials and representatives of the Saskatchewan business community.

At a summit in Prague May 6, Canada and the EU agreed to begin negotiations toward a comprehensive economic agreement. The Regina event is one of four EC-sponsored workshops in Western Canada that are intended to provide information and raise awareness of commercial opportunities and issues posed by forthcoming negotiations toward the proposed agreement.

"Saskatchewan's economy is highly trade-oriented and in the current environment, nothing is more important to the global economy than reducing trade barriers and eliminating protectionism," Intergovernmental Affairs Deputy Minister Harley Olsen said on behalf of Premier Brad Wall. "The European Union represents a trading bloc of 27 countries and a population of nearly half a billion people, so Saskatchewan welcomes any initiative that would lead to increased export opportunities and a better investment climate with the EU."

"Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) fully endorse this initiative," STEP President and CEO Lionel LaBelle said. "Saskatchewan business competes on a global scale everyday and we welcome the opportunity to grow and expand our economic reach into the EU."

  • The program will include panel sessions focusing on:
    existing and emerging trends and issues in trade and investment between Canada, Saskatchewan and the EU; and
  • Opportunities for R&D and scientific co-operation between Saskatchewan and the EU on clean energy technologies.

The event will conclude with a networking luncheon.
