A pilot program at Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park should result in more families getting the opportunity to experience a camping vacation at the park this summer.
The pilot will designate 54 campsites in the Sagebrush campground as being available for a maximum 14-night stay only, during the peak camping period beginning June 24 through to Monday, September 7.
"We are using the pilot project to determine if limiting the stay in some of our sites will create opportunities for more families to share in this wonderful summertime camping experience," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "This pilot project will also help determine if a maximum stay would be a useful tool at Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park and possibly in some of our other very popular provincial park campgrounds around the province in the future."
The improved campsites in Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park are part of more than 300 campsites in provincial parks that have had electrical service added to them since last summer. Another 250 to 300 are currently being upgraded and will be available next summer. They are part of the government's four-year program to add electrical service to 1,000 campsites.
"We are committed to improving the overall camping experience and to offering everyone the best camping opportunities possible," Duncan said. "As demand for campsites in the provincial parks continues to grow, one of our goals is to ensure more campers have access to improved services. We are taking steps to meet that goal by building new campgrounds and adding electricity to more sites - right across the province."
Twenty-six of the Sagebrush campsites will be available through the Reserve-a-Site program. The other 28 will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers who may have submitted a previous Reserve-a-Site request for a spot at Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park and were unsuccessful, will need to submit a new request if they are interested in any of the new sites. The Reserve-a-Site program can be accessed at www.saskparks.net or by calling the park campground office at 1-306-375-5527.
The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport is also renovating or replacing service centres, entry gates and park offices. There is also work underway to improve boat launches and replace picnic tables and barbeques.
