Two innovative Saskatoon primary health care projects are being recognized in Toronto today at the Tommy Douglas Celebration of Medicare Awards.
"It's fitting that these innovative primary health care teams serving Saskatoon's core neighbourhoods are being recognized with national awards," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "When it comes to collaborative solutions and finding ways to help people help themselves, Saskatchewan has a proud tradition. I want to congratulate the West Winds and Health Bus primary health care teams on receiving recognition for their excellent work."
The Mobile Primary Health Bus won an award of excellence for interdisciplinary community services. Operated jointly by the Saskatoon Health Region and MD Ambulance Care Ltd., the mobile health centre overcomes barriers by bringing services to one of seven core-area locations each day. A team of paramedics and nurse practitioners offer check-ups, health education, chronic disease management, wound care and follow-up care.
The West Winds Primary Health Centre won an award of excellence for interdisciplinary primary health care. Run jointly by the Saskatoon Health Region and the University of Saskatchewan's Department of Family Medicine, the centre is a focal point for primary health care services, interdisciplinary education and research in an area of the city that was largely under-served.
The centre, with about 120 health professionals, is also a test site for information technology systems to support interdisciplinary teams.
"Saskatoon Health Region is thrilled to have two of our teams receive Tommy Douglas Celebration of Medicare Awards," Saskatoon Health Region President and CEO Maura Davies said. "Our staff, at West Winds as well as the Primary Health Care Bus, are creating a difference in many lives by making health services easily available to citizens of our core communities. We are pleased that both awards are for programs that are based on a collaborative model, with organizations that have teamed with the health region to deliver services in a very effective way."
The awards, by the New Health Professionals Network, are being awarded at a national primary health care conference. The network represents more than 20,000 students pursuing training in health fields across Canada.
