A Habitat for Humanity partner family in Yorkton will soon realize their dream of home ownership, thanks to a $50,000 funding commitment from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) announced today.
"Our government is pleased to support Habitat for Humanity and other community based organizations to help build brighter futures for Saskatchewan families," Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. "Projects such as this will help provide more affordable housing choices for families in need of assistance and provide opportunities for communities to work together to achieve a common goal."
"We are elated at the first ever groundbreaking ceremony for Habitat for Humanity in Yorkton," Habitat for Humanity Regina Inc. CEO Dennis Coutts said. "This is a historic event, and certainly the first of many to come. In partnership with SHC and the community, we have made a local family's dream of home ownership come true through the first chapter in the province. Congratulations are in order."
The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced on March 30 to assist Habitat for Humanity's provincial chapters in providing 20 lower-income Saskatchewan families with homes to call their own. A total of 20 quality affordable housing units will be constructed in Yorkton, Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Lloydminster.
The single family home will be located at 221 Betts Street in Yorkton. Construction is expected to be completed in November 2009.
