SaskTel and Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation are the first government agencies in Canada to become members of The Climate Registry and commit to voluntarily measure and report their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Crown Investments Corporation (CIC) is heading the project which will see all Saskatchewan Crown corporations consistently measuring and reporting GHG data through The Climate Registry by 2010. The Registry is a non-profit collaboration among North American states, provinces, territories and Native Sovereign Nations that sets consistent, transparent standards to calculate, verify and publicly report GHG emissions into a single source.
"It's exciting that our Crowns are the first among Canadian government agencies to join The Climate Registry," Minister Responsible for CIC June Draude said. "Establishing a baseline for greenhouse gas emissions in the Crown sector is an important step. Once all the Crowns are participating, we will be able to identify the carbon footprint of our Crown sector on an annual basis and set targets."
CIC issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a company to help the Crown corporations to compile, calculate and report GHG emissions data to The Climate Registry. Integrated Designs, a Saskatchewan-based consulting firm, was selected and will begin gathering the emissions data for SaskTel and Sask Gaming for 2008 and 2009.
"Our government is committed to helping Saskatchewan Go Green through leading by example," Environment Minister Nancy Heppner said. "Calculating and reporting GHG emissions in our Crown sector is a significant part of meeting the targets set out in the Saskatchewan Greenhouse Gas Reduction plan."
"Crowns have the opportunity to demonstrate environmental leadership roles that are very visible to the public and other government agencies," Executive Director of The Climate Registry Diane Wittenberg said. "Right now SaskTel and Sask Gaming are pioneers in making the significant step to not only voluntarily report their emissions according to rigorous standards, but also to do it in an international program. This is very timely as climate change policy talks are anticipated between Canada and the U.S."
Emissions are reported to The Registry by June 30 for the previous year. So 2009 emissions must be reported by June 30, 2010, and will be verified by a third party by December 15, 2010. The first SaskTel and Sask Gaming emissions reports will be available in early 2011.
