Saskatoon's Gordon Howe Park and Bob Van Impe Stadium were buzzing with fans today as the XII Men's World Softball Championship kicked off an exciting nine-day competition.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to have contributed $100,000 to this premiere championship through our Tourism Initiatives budget," s Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "This is an excellent opportunity to highlight our province, our cities and our facilities, while extending Saskatchewan's well-known warm hospitality."
"This event will showcase the top 16 ranked softball teams from around the world," Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association President Bryan Kosteroski said. "More than 400 Saskatchewan volunteers will provide the opportunity for visitors from around the world to watch these top softball players compete for the International Softball Federation World Champion crown."
The XII Men's World Softball Championship runs from July 17 - 26, 2009, and will bring teams from 16 nations and approximately 14,000 tourists to Saskatchewan.
