The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has begun lowering water levels on Theodore Reservoir in order to make necessary repairs to the Theodore Dam.
"The dam, which was originally constructed in 1964, requires immediate repairs to ensure that it remains structurally sound. If we do not make these repairs there is a risk the dam could fail in the event of an extreme flood," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Nancy Heppner said. "We regret any inconvenience this will cause to the many recreational users that frequent the reservoir, but lowering the water levels is necessary in order to complete the repairs before winter freeze-up."
Theodore Dam is located northeast of the Village of Theodore on the Whitesand River. The reservoir created by the dam provides water for stock watering and domestic uses, and supports an active sport fishery. The Whitesand Regional Park, located along the shores of the reservoir, is a popular recreational destination.
Over time, the earth adjacent to the concrete dam spillway has slumped, threatening the structure's integrity. This requires immediate corrective action to stabilize the slope in order to prevent further damage.
The watershed authority began releasing water from the dam on July 15th. Water levels will be drawn down by approximately one inch per day, and will be drawn down by approximately 1.5 metres on or around September 1st. This may begin to interfere with normal operations of the boat launch at the Whitesand Regional Park as early as August 1st.
The repair work will be completed by mid-October. Water levels are expected to return to normal levels by next spring.
