Residents of the Village of Kenaston will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to upgrade the water treatment plant. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and Arm River-Watrous MLA Greg Brkich.
This project is just one example of the commitment of all three levels of government to strengthen the Saskatchewan economy by reducing red tape, creating jobs for the people of Saskatchewan, and getting shovels in the ground sooner.
"Residents of Kenaston will soon have a cleaner, safer water supply, thanks to a commitment by our Government to work with the province of Saskatchewan on projects which improve the quality of life for Saskatchewan families," said Yelich. "Our Government's investment in projects like this will help stimulate the economy while improving local infrastructure for the future."
This project will enhance local services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest. This project features a blended water system using greens and filters and reverse osmosis to reduce high uranium content levels to acceptable standards.
"The province continues to work in partnership with municipalities and the federal government to make infrastructure a priority in Saskatchewan," Brkich said. "This water treatment plant upgrade in Kenaston will go a long way towards improving critical infrastructure for residents."
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan will each invest up to $173,333 in the project. The Village of Kenaston will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $520,000.
"On behalf of the residents of the Village of Kenaston, I would like to thank both the provincial and federal governments for their financial assistance in helping to improve the water quality in Kenaston," Village of Kenaston Mayor Dan O'Handley said. "We would not have been able to accomplish this undertaking without their support."
This is one of 145 projects announced under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund that will break ground quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of over $227 million. Together with municipal contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in Saskatchewan for the Building Canada Communities Component exceeds $340 million. The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan communities.
