The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport today announced that Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert is receiving $25,000 through the Building Pride program. The money will be used to help celebrate and honour the 100th anniversary of the Cooke Municipal Golf Course. The Cooke Municipal Golf course is the oldest, continually played, public golf course in Saskatchewan.
"We are pleased to be able to take part in recognizing a significant milestone for Prince Albert and the province," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "Saskatchewan has much to be proud of. We have an enviable quality of life, a vibrant culture and a rich historic fabric. The Building Pride program is designed to help communities celebrate special events such as centennials. These celebrations build pride in our province and our history. Government is pleased to be working with communities to make Saskatchewan the best place in Canada to live, work and play."
Local golf enthusiasts laid out the first nine holes of a public course in 1909. Up until that time they had played mostly in backyards. The Cooke Municipal Golf Course has been welcoming and challenging golfers since then.
The Building Pride program was announced in January 2009. With an annual $750,000 allocation, Building Pride helps organizations and municipalities celebrate significant milestones and special initiatives that leave a legacy for future generations.
The next deadline for applications to the Building Pride program is October 31, 2009. Details of the program can be found at: www.tpcs.gov.sk.ca/buildingpride/.
