The week is dedicated to celebrating our archival records and the people who maintain them. These records of our collective past play a vital role in helping us understand Saskatchewan's shared history and culture.
"Saskatchewan's archives feature a treasure trove of papers, films and other records that tell the history of the province and its people," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "In honour of our rich heritage and the ongoing work done to preserve it, the provincial government is proud to proclaim February 2 to 8 as Archives Week in Saskatchewan."
A range of interesting events are being planned across the province including celebrity readings, phone-in programs, displays and film nights.
At both Regina's and Saskatoon's Public Libraries, you can catch Spotlight on the Past: Celebrity Readings from Archives in Saskatchewan. Archives Film Night, featuring heritage short films will be held at Paradise Cinemas in Regina and the historic Roxy Theatre in Saskatoon.
CBC Radio will be airing Archives Phone-In, a program where listeners may ask questions of Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists, Archives Advisor Carey Isaak and City of Saskatoon Archivist Jeff O'Brien.
In addition to the events in Regina and Saskatoon there will be open houses, public readings or exhibits in North Battleford, Yorkton, Lloydminster and Shaunavon.
"There will also be displays of photographs that need to be identified set up in both Humboldt and LaRonge," Isaak said. "Identifying photos is one way the public can help us to put historical items into context. It also helps show people how archives help to preserve our history and cultural roots."
