MINISTER BJORNERUD TO PROMOTE SASKATCHEWAN AT AGRICULTURE SUMMIT

Released on January 21, 2009

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud will be promoting Saskatchewan's agriculture industry when he travels to San Diego, California to participate in the Legislative Agricultural Chairs Summit January 23-25.

"I am looking forward to working with my U.S. counterparts," Bjornerud said. "This is an opportunity for me to highlight Saskatchewan agriculture but also to discuss some of the challenges facing our producers."

The summit, hosted by State Agriculture and Rural Leaders Inc., will be attended by other state and provincial legislators. It will touch on a number of topics, including competitiveness, labour and immigration, and issues surrounding drought.

Addressing market access issues such as Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) and strengthening Saskatchewan's relationship with other jurisdictions continue to be priorities for Bjornerud.

"Our provincial agriculture industry is very much export-dependent," Bjornerud said. "I look forward to building stronger ties with our trading partners to the south."

State Agriculture and Rural Leaders Inc. was formed in 2006, at the fourth Annual Legislative Agriculture Chairs Summit in Tempe, Arizona. One of the main goals of the organization is to promote and foster educational opportunities, co-operation and leadership among chairs of state legislative committees having jurisdiction over agriculture and rural development issues.
