Juniper Manor, a three-storey residential building featuring 43 new rental units, officially opened in Saskatoon today for seniors in need of low-cost housing.
"Building stability, increasing affordability and enhancing the quality of housing are critical supports that must be in place to ensure that all Saskatchewan people, including seniors, benefit from our prosperous economy," Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said. "Juniper Manor will be a place of comfort and security for its residents, and our government is proud to help make a difference in the lives of the senior members of this community."
"The City of Saskatoon is very proud to support affordable housing projects like Juniper Manor," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "Not only will Juniper Manor provide much needed low-cost housing for seniors by utilizing a once-vacant site in the revitalizing Riversdale neighbourhood but it also helps to ensure citizens have a home in our growing, thriving city now, and into the future."
The project, which was undertaken by Juniper Housing Corporation, cost approximately $4.8 million, with $2.9 million from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and $322,400 from the City of Saskatoon. The funding balance was provided through mortgage financing, community fundraising, land and in-kind contributions. Additional funding was provided by the City of Saskatoon through their Enterprise Zone incentives, such as tax abatements and rebates totalling over $68,000. Juniper's partners and supporters include the Saskatoon Chinese Benevolent Association, Saskatoon Chinese Cultural Association, Chinese Ladies' Association, along with AODBT Architectural Interior Design and North Ridge Development Corporation.
Juniper Manor is located in Riversdale and consists of 10 studio, nine bachelor and 24 one-bedroom units. The project features Asian architecture to reflect the traditions of the community. The building is currently undergoing occupancy.
