KRAWETZ RECEIVES UKRAINE’S HIGHEST HONOUR

Released on January 14, 2009

Premier Brad Wall today congratulated Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz for receiving Ukraine's highest honour recently. Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko recognized Krawetz and three other Canadians with the order of Kniaz (King) Yaroslav the Wise.

The award recognized Krawetz and the other recipients for their contribution to better relations between Ukraine and for their active participation in the International Remembrance Flame and raising awareness of the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian genocide known as Holodomor.

"Deputy Premier Krawetz was instrumental to Saskatchewan's efforts to recognize the Holodomor, which honours the memory of the 10 million souls who lost their lives during the Ukrainian famine," Wall said. "This recognition by the country of Ukraine is the highest recognition available to a non-citizen, and on behalf of the residents of Saskatchewan on this Ukrainian New Year's Day, I salute Deputy Premier Krawetz for his continued work in building a strong relationship with Ukraine."

"I am deeply honoured to be receiving this prestigious award from the President of Ukraine, the homeland of my grandparents," Krawetz said. "I will wear this award with pride and will continue to work at establishing meaningful partnerships and strong ties with the people of Ukraine.

Krawetz introduced legislation in the Legislature last May which recognizes the people who died during the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-1933. The Act ensures that on the fourth Saturday in November each year, Holodomor will be remembered and recognized.
