$200,000 FOR SOURCE WATER PROTECTION GROUPS

Released on February 26, 2009

Eight non-profit groups are receiving funding to further protect the province's water resources.

These agencies keep Saskatchewan's watersheds and water bodies healthy and viable. This ensures Saskatchewan residents can use water for drinking, recreation, economic and agricultural purposes. Each of the non-profit groups will receive $25,000 for a total of $200,000.

This funding will encourage active involvement by communities in the implementation of source water protection plans. These plans were developed by local residents and carried out by the following funding recipients:

  • Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association Inc.;
  • Lower Souris Watershed Committee Inc.;
  • Moose Jaw River Watershed Stewards Inc.;
  • North Saskatchewan River Basin Council Inc.;
  • South Saskatchewan River Watershed Stewards Inc.; and
  • Wascana and Upper Qu'Appelle Watersheds Association Taking Responsibility Inc.

Funding recipients also include the First Nations Agricultural Council of Saskatchewan Inc. and the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards Inc.

"Water is a valuable resource that is essential for the future of our health, economy and environment," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Nancy Heppner said. "These funds will assist local organizations in their efforts to protect Saskatchewan's water sources."

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority leads management of the province's water resources to ensure safe drinking water sources and economic, environmental and social benefits for Saskatchewan people.
