SASKATCHEWAN TRIP TO INDIA A SUCCESS

Released on February 24, 2009

Meetings with major industrial groups, senior national ministries and agencies, and universities and technical institutions were the central activities of the Saskatchewan delegation to India which returned on Sunday.

Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart led the delegation, which engaged in 22 meetings with 127 people in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi over the past week. The delegation included representation from Saskatchewan's business community, two universities and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC).

"Significant interest on the part of the government and other Indian corporate interests was shown and invitations to visit Saskatchewan to pursue this interest were accepted," Stewart said. "Strengthening our economic relationships with India, and creating new ones, was the primary purpose of this trip. We met with significant interest in collaboration, investment opportunities in potash, oil and other areas, and exports, and will continue negotiations on these, along with several major trade and investment opportunities. We also had very productive meetings with educational and technical organizations, and the co-operation of the University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina and SRC was key to that success."

The Minister's visit attracted significant interest from international and local media such as the London Financial Times, BBC Evening Report, and the Hindu Business Line, providing a window to spread the Saskatchewan message to a global audience.
