Plans for a new courthouse building were unveiled in Meadow Lake today. The Saskatchewan Party government is investing $19 million in the project, which will provide space and security for people working at and attending court.
"The volume of cases in Meadow Lake has doubled in the past ten years," Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan said. "This new building is needed to address that increased caseload and provide up-to-date security for people using the courts."
The Government of Saskatchewan has, to-date, invested approximately $1.8 million to purchase the land, complete planning and architectural drawings, and site preparation for the new Meadow Lake courthouse. The total estimated cost to complete this project is $19 million.
The design phase of the project included broad consultation with court users from the community and surrounding area. The courthouse will be built to the specifications of environmentally sound construction practices known as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED. This will significantly reduce the costs of building operations and provide long term savings. Using environmentally-sound building practices supports the Saskatchewan government's commitment to the environment.
