TWO ESTHETICIAN TRADES DESIGNATED

Released on February 18, 2009

Saskatchewan residents now have two additional designated trades careers to choose from - Esthetician-Nail Technician and Esthetician-Skin Care Technician.

"The spa industry has grown significantly in the last few years," Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) board chair Garry Kot said. "These new designations are driven by industry's needs to ensure consumers have the opportunity to choose services from competent, certified journeypersons with current, relevant skills that meet industry standards."

Nail Technician Journeypersons perform manicures, pedicures, cosmetic massage of the limbs and fingers, and apply artificial nails. Skin Care Technician Journeypersons perform specialized body and facial treatments, correct skin problems using electric current or laser technology, perform make-up artistry, cosmetic massage, tweezing, hair removal using various methods, lash and brow tinting, lash extensions, manicures and pedicures.

Tradespersons who want to obtain their provincial journeyperson certification must demonstrate three years (5,400 hours) of trade time experience and provide proof of acceptable training. The fee is $250 to challenge the written and practical examinations.

Apprenticeship training in each trade takes two years (3,600 hours). In addition to experience acquired on-the-job, while working under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, apprentices provide proof of completion of acceptable technical training. This training may be taken before commencing work in the trade or after registering as an apprentice. Additional information regarding modular training will appear on the apprenticeship website shortly.

Private vocational schools, whose Esthetician programs have not yet been evaluated by the Commission, must contact the SATCC Program Development Branch at 306-933-8476 as soon as possible.

The number of Saskatchewan apprentices registering into the skilled trades continues to grow. There were 8,800 apprentices as of February 2009 compared to 7,700 just one year ago. For more information about careers in the skilled trades, visit www.saskapprenticeship.ca or call 1-877-363-0536.
