GOVERNMENT ASSISTS REGINA YMCA TO DEVELOP NEW CHILD CARE FACILITY

Released on February 18, 2009

The Ministry of Education is providing $225,000 in capital funding to the YMCA of Regina to develop a new child care centre. The centre will have 75 spaces for families in need of care for their preschool children.

"We are pleased to provide funding for the YMCA for the development of new child care spaces, particularly at a time when families in this area have been affected by nearby child care facilities deciding to close their doors," Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz said.

"Our YMCA is working hard to meet the needs of our community" YMCA of Regina CEO Randy Klassen said. "We are proud to receive this funding and to be a part of the solution for parents looking for quality child care. The YMCA Northwest Family centre is an excellent facility and a great place for kids to learn and have fun."

Licensed child care centres in Saskatchewan are managed and operated by public or community-based non-profit organizations that are regulated and partially funded by government. The government provides capital funding to help licensed child care facilities with the cost of new construction or renovations when they are developing new spaces. The YMCA's new facility, which will be located at 5939 Rochdale Boulevard, is expected to be ready in April.
