CELEBRATE SASKATCHEWAN HERITAGE WEEK FEBRUARY 16-20

Released on February 17, 2009

The province is celebrating the past by proclaiming February 16 to 20 as Heritage Week in Saskatchewan.

"Heritage Week is an opportunity to appreciate and learn more about Saskatchewan's rich history," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Every community, big or small, rural or urban has places that are valued for their historical importance. These historic places define the character of our communities, strengthen our sense of place and identity and attract tourists. I encourage you to learn more about the historic places in your community during Heritage Week."

The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation and the Saskatchewan Architectural Heritage Society, will host a public lecture by leading Canadian heritage planner and researcher Dr. Robert Shipley, on February 20, at the Shumiatcher Theatre - MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina.

Shipley will discuss the link between heritage conservation and economic development.

Heritage Week coincides with Saskatchewan's Family Day and the Heritage Canada Foundation's Heritage Day which are both celebrated on February 16.
