PROVINCE INJECTS $142 MILLION INTO 102 SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE PROVINCE

Released on February 9, 2009

102 Saskatchewan schools in 63 communities will benefit from a $142 million infrastructure boost announced today by Education Minister Ken Krawetz. Improvements include everything from maintenance and repairs, to brand new schools.

"In total, these schools educate over 35,000 students throughout the province," said Krawetz at Regina's Balfour Collegiate, which will benefit from significant roof repairs.

"Our Association is extremely pleased with the commitment the government has shown to children's infrastructure. This announcement will go a long way toward helping school boards ensure that schools in Saskatchewan are great places for children and youth to live, learn and grow," said Roy Challis, President of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association.

The funding is part of the $500 million "economic booster shot" announced by Premier Brad Wall last week.

"We want to ensure our economy stays strong," Krawetz said. "By moving ahead quickly on these much-needed projects, we are helping both our children and the economy."

Major PreK-12 capital projects requiring funding of more than $800,000 include:
• New schools in Humboldt, Regina, Oxbow, Prince Albert, and Porcupine Plain
• Renovations of schools in Duck Lake, La Ronge, Saskatoon, Maple Creek, Balcarres, Hafford, Regina, Elrose, and Weyburn

Other smaller capital block changes include: mechanical upgrades, renovations and foundation repairs in 28 schools, new and renovated relocatable classrooms in 10 schools, improved accessibility in seven schools, and roof repairs or replacements in 43 schools.

The $142 million investment for the province's education infrastructure is in addition to the over $117 million already announced for PreK-12 education capital this year, under the Ready for Growth initiative.
