CAPITAL BOOST FOR GREAT PLAINS COLLEGE

Released on February 9, 2009

As part of a $26.4 million investment in the Saskatchewan's advanced education system, Swift Current's Great Plains College is receiving a major facelift.

"This investment achieves two important goals," Advanced Education and Employment Minister Rob Norris said. "It helps us to address our ongoing talent challenge by enhancing our ability to train young Saskatchewan people, and it creates new opportunities and new economic activity for the southwest region."

The funding will enable much-needed improvements at the college's Swift Current campus to proceed. Planned work includes:

• a new multi-purpose workshop
• upgraded classrooms, tutorial spaces and computer facilities
• office renovations
• upgraded mechanical and environmental systems

"This investment ensures that more Saskatchewan people are actively engaged in the economy now and for years to come," Norris said. "It is an investment in securing the future of our people and our economy."

Norris said that the government will continue to work to build a seamless path among education, jobs and careers, and that creating an even stronger system of regional colleges is a key milestone on that path.
