PROVINCE INVESTS $12 MILLION IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR REGINA

Released on February 4, 2009

Low-income households in the Regina area will have better access to quality, affordable housing, with the announcement today of $12 million in provincial funding for the renovation of the 140-unit Milton Heights apartment building in south-central Regina.

The funding is part of the Ministry of Social Service's nearly $30 million acceleration in infrastructure spending for students, seniors, low-income households, and people with intellectual disabilities--part of the $500 million "economic booster shot" announced by Premier Brad Wall on Monday. The $29.9 million includes: $15 million for student housing at the U of S, $12 million for affordable housing in Regina, $2.3 million for 12 affordable housing units for seniors in Prince Albert, and $600,000 for improvements to activity centres and group living homes that will benefit people with intellectual disabilities in Maidstone, Yorkton and Langenburg.

"The Province is pleased to invest in the redevelopment of Milton Heights, as part of our commitment to address the housing needs of seniors, families, students, and youth across Saskatchewan," Regina Qu'Appelle Valley MLA Laura Ross said, on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer. "The government is working hard to ensure a better life for all Saskatchewan people, as part of our vision of growth and opportunity."

Milton Heights is a 10-story apartment building with 140 suites, located at 1100 Broadway Avenue in Regina. The building is situated beside Broadway Terrace, and across the street from a large grocery store, medical office building and restaurant. Built in the mid 1950s, it was the first high-rise apartment building in Regina.

"Thanks to this significant new funding from the Province, 140 good quality rental units will remain available to low-income households for many years to come," Regina Lutheran Care Society CEO Jill Beatty said. "We look forward to completing this important initiative in partnership with the Ministry of Social Services, and its agency, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation."
