GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES NAMED AFTER SASKATCHEWAN HEROS

Released on December 22, 2009

The Minister of Tourism, Parks Culture and Sport, on the recommendations of the Saskatchewan Geographic Names Board, approved three new geographic place names in Saskatchewan under the Board's GeoMemorial Program.

The GeoMemorial Program commemorates individuals born or raised in Saskatchewan including armed forces, police officers and emergency responders who gave their lives in the line of duty, as well as other persons of prominence who contributed to our province.

"The names we bestow on Saskatchewan's geographic landscape truly reflect our proud culture and heritage," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "They leave a lasting legacy for future generations. It is my honour to commemorate those who lost their lives or otherwise contributed to the freedom and quality of life we enjoy today."

Duncan approved the following new GeoMemorial place names for geographic features in northeastern Saskatchewan: "Dustin Wasden Island" in Wasden Lake in honour of Corporal Dustin (Wazzy) Wasden who was killed while on active duty in Afghanistan in August 2008; "Mattson Lake" in honour of Leading Aircraftsman Vernon Gilbert Mattson who was killed in Yorkshire, England in February 1945 while on active duty during World War II; and "Morrison Peninsula" after Cecil Mathew Kinley Morrison (1896 - 1969) in the persons of prominence category. Morrison was a veteran of both World War I and World War II who made important contributions in civic government and professional associations in Saskatchewan. As well, the name of Trooper Lee Irwin Preston, who was killed in France during World War II will be added to the existing GeoMemorial place names records for "Preston Lake" which is already named after his brother, Sgt. David Porter Preston.

To date, nearly 4,000 northern lakes, peninsulas, bays, islands and rivers have been named for individuals under the GeoMemorial naming program.

"To further honour fallen armed forces, police officers and emergency responders and Saskatchewan persons of prominence, their families will receive a commemorative scroll and information about the newly named geographic feature," Saskatchewan Geographic Names Board Chair Carlos Germann said. "The documentation will be retained as part of the official Saskatchewan Geographic Place Name file, which is accessible by any interested person or group. It will also be entered into the national geographic name database for cartographic and other uses."
