PROSECUTIONS PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF SASKATCHEWAN WORKERS

Eleven employers have been prosecuted for violations of The Labour Standards Act and Regulations in 2009, resulting in $10,860 in fines.

Employers prosecuted were: Best Buildings Inc. (Moose Jaw) Crazy Cactus Restaurant Ltd. (Saskatoon), D & L Heating & Gas Fitting Ltd. (Saskatoon), DQ Grill & Chill and Normanview Dairy Queen (Regina), Golden Oaks Personal Care Home (Regina), Strictly Construction (Swift Current), Timberland Janitorial Services (Prince Albert), Tomas the Cook Restaurant (Saskatoon), Tony Tomas Restaurant (33rd Street, Saskatoon) and Tri-Star Security (Regina).

"This is the highest level of Labour Standards prosecutions in the past 20 years," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "This is part of our government's commitment to protect and uphold the rights of Saskatchewan workers."

The Labour Standards Branch of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour supports fair and equitable workplace practices through public awareness and enforcement of The Labour Standards Act and Regulations as well as other labour legislation. Wherever necessary, violators will be prosecuted.

Between April 1, 2009 and November 30, 2009, Labour Standards has completed 1,431 investigations, issued 42 certificates for a value of $165,691, referred 16 files to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution, successfully completed 11 prosecution files resulting in convictions and fines (to date, each file referred to Justice has resulted in a conviction), and recovered $865,213 of unpaid wages for employees, of which $112,935 was recovered through the Collections Unit.
