CPSP REMINDS YOU TO BE SAFE AROUND FIRE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing's Office of the Fire Commissioner and Sask911 remind Saskatchewan residents that extreme winter weather and holiday decorations are a combustible combination.

Make sure you and your family are safe from fire over the holidays while seasonal fun might be a distraction. Just by taking these few simple precautions, you are ensuring a safe and happy holiday:

  • Test your smoke alarms to make sure they are working and change the batteries if necessary.
  • Cooking is a major cause of home fires, so don't leave the kitchen if there's something cooking on the stove.
  • Keep space heaters at least one metre away from things that could burn. Don't leave them unattended. 
  • Dispose of smoking materials safely and responsibly.
  • Never leave candles burning when there is no one in the room. Make sure they are extinguished.
  • Drink responsibly and keep an eye on those who do not. Excessive alcohol consumption is a contributing factor in many home fires.
  • If you have a real indoor Christmas tree, water it regularly.

"Last year, there were 21 fire deaths here in Saskatchewan, and the average annual fire loss stands at $38 million," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "These costs to life and property don't have to happen. I urge you and your family to take extra care around sources of fire through out the year and especially during this holiday season."
