GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN COMMITS $100,000 TO BELL BARN PROJECT

Released on August 25, 2009

Today, Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan, Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud, and Health Minister and MLA for Indian Head-Milestone Don McMorris announced $100,000 in funding towards the reconstruction of the historic Bell Barn in Indian Head.

"For 125 years, the Bell Barn stood as a symbolic link to Saskatchewan's past," Duncan said. "By investing in this project, we're ensuring that future generations will be able to learn and appreciate our great history."

The Bell Barn, Saskatchewan's first round barn, was dismantled in April 2008 because of its deteriorating condition. It is being reconstructed on another portion of the original Bell Farm yard.

"Our government is committed to preserving the agricultural foundations of our province," Bjornerud said. "The Bell Barn is a unique part of our history and we are proud to support this project."

Last February, the Heritage Canada Foundation included the Bell Barn on its Top Ten Most Endangered Places list. The Bell Barn Society is rebuilding the barn as a heritage site and interpretive tourist centre.

"The Bell Barn has been a significant landmark in the Indian Head area since the farm was established," McMorris said. "I commend the Bell Barn Society and everyone involved with this project for their efforts and look forward to seeing the historic structure restored."

"This funding commitment clearly demonstrates the province's support for the preservation, development and interpretation of Saskatchewan's agricultural heritage," Bell Barn Society Chairperson Frank Korvemaker said. "We have now achieved more than 95% of the $1.3 million dollars needed for the project. With these funds, we can confirm that the project will be completed on time for a Grand Opening in 2010."

The Bell Barn was constructed in 1882 on the Bell Farm, a corporate farm that was originally an experiment supported by the federal government of Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. Although the corporate farm only operated until 1889, the mythology of this farm has lived on in history books and through people of the Indian Head district.
