Saskatchewan amateur sports scored big with upgrades to Douglas Park thanks to a joint investment by the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan Minister of Municipal Affairs Jeremy Harrison and Member of Parliament for Regina-Qu'Appelle Andrew Scheer, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Saskatchewan will be contributing $750,000 to the project to construct new artificial turf at Leibel Field, new washrooms, change rooms and storage facilities. The Government of Canada's matching funding is anticipated to be confirmed shortly, along with the City of Regina and Regina Minor Football and Regina Soccer Association.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of Leibel Field to a healthy and active community," Harrison said. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
"I'm pleased to announce that our Government, through Canada's Economic Action Plan, is taking immediate action to ensure that communities across the West have access to the essential infrastructure we need today and in the future," Scheer said. "Projects such as improvements to Leibel Field at Douglas Park will not only create immediate jobs for this community, but will also help pave the way for Regina's future growth and prosperity."
"The City of Regina is very excited to be one of three levels of government partnering with the Regina Soccer Association and Regina Minor Football in the Douglas Park Upgrade project," City Councillor Mike O'Donnell, on behalf of Mayor Pat Fiacco, said. "The new field and support facility will be a positive addition to picturesque Douglas Park as a city wide sport and recreation complex benefiting children and youth in the City of Regina. The construction of the support facility will also benefit numerous other sport and recreation organizations that currently use the Douglas Park complex."
"On behalf of Regina Minor Football and the thousands of boys and girls from Regina and surrounding area, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the Government of Saskatchewan for this outstanding contribution to the future development of this first class facility," Kelly Hamilton, President of Regina Minor Football 2000 Inc. said.
"This exciting facility development creates recreational opportunities for all members of the athletic community," Executive Director of Regina Soccer Association Dennis Morse said. "Soccer and football supporters are pleased with the result this partnership has brought to benefit the city and province. The infusion of $800,000 by the Regina Soccer Association and Regina Minor Football cements the commitment of the amateur athletic community with the City of Regina, Province of Saskatchewan and Canadian government in the support of this extraordinary recreational project. Current and future generations of athletes will embrace this opportunity to develop their sport under all weather conditions."
Once all contributions have been approved, the estimated total project cost of $3 million will result in attracting sports organizations and games with a national presence such as the Canada Games. The improvements will offer local athletes an opportunity to train and play at top quality facilities and stimulate the local economy when the city can host national games in various sporting events as well as create jobs.
The artificial turf at Leibel Field will extend the season and allow for more use while conserving water, reducing gasoline powered maintenance and the application of herbicides and pesticides.
