NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR SASKATCHEWAN VOLUNTEER MEDAL

Released on August 20, 2009

Saskatchewan residents have until October 19 to nominate individuals for the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. The Volunteer Medal recognizes individuals who have provided outstanding volunteer service or exceptional community involvement.

"The most valuable gift people can give is the gift of their time," Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart said. "In our province, we are blessed beyond measure by committed volunteers. The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal enables us to pay tribute to our most generous citizens; I encourage everyone to consider nominating a deserving individual for this prestigious provincial honour."

Any Canadian citizen who is a current or former long term resident of Saskatchewan is eligible for nomination. Nominations cannot be accepted for sitting members of Parliament or the Legislature, or members of the judiciary who currently hold office. Groups or organizations cannot be nominated. Posthumous nominations are not accepted.

Since the Medal's inception in 1995, 120 recipients have received the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. A list of recipients, information and nomination forms can be found online at www.ops.gov.sk.ca or call toll-free 1-877-427-5505.
