RENEWED FUNDING FOR MEN’S SHELTER IN LLOYDMINSTER

Released on August 17, 2009

Homeless Saskatchewan men in the Lloydminster area will continue to have access to emergency housing, following the approval of a funding arrangement between the province and the Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society.

Under the arrangement, the province will provide the men's shelter in Lloydminster with funding of up to $110,000 this fiscal year. The 28-bed facility opened in March 2008, and is managed by the Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society.

"We are pleased to continue our support of the commendable work of the Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society in providing homeless men in their community with emergency shelter," Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said. "Homelessness is a complex social problem. We are grateful for the expertise and dedication of local agencies such as the Social Action Coalition as we work together to address homelessness in our province."

"Homelessness continues to be a challenging issue in Lloydminster due to our city's healthy economy and tight rental market," Lloydminster MLA Tim McMillan said. "This funding ensures that homeless men in Lloydminster will have a safe temporary residence that is managed by knowledgeable, caring people."

"We are pleased that the Government of Saskatchewan is continuing to support the important work that we do at the Lloydminster men's shelter," Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society President Phyllis Tomkins said. "Through this funding, the government is helping to ensure that homeless Saskatchewan men have access to emergency housing until they can find more permanent accommodation in the Lloydminster area."
