GOVERNMENT DELIVERS OVER $100,000 TO PROTECT SOURCE WATER IN ASSINIBOINE RIVER WATERSHED

Released on August 12, 2009

The Government of Saskatchewan is supporting locally-driven efforts to safeguard water in the Assiniboine River watershed through an enhanced funding grant from the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority.

"Making sure that all Saskatchewan people have access to clean, safe water is a priority for our government and this group's efforts are helping make that happen. We are very pleased to increase our financial support for these local leaders and their important work," Minister of the Environment and Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Nancy Heppner said.

Bob Carles Vice-President of Stewardship for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority, on behalf of Heppner, presented a cheque for $70,471 to Chair of the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association Don Olson, at an event held today in Yorkton.

The group will also receive additional funding from the Watershed Authority throughout the year, for a total of $108,418; an increase of almost $40,000. This grant is intended to support the group's ongoing work to implement the Assiniboine River Watershed Source Water Protection Plan and the Yorkton Area Aquifers Source Water Protection Plan.

The plans, which were released in August 2006, contain 67 key actions aimed at keeping the area's water safe and in good supply. Of those 67 key actions, 27 have either been completed or are currently in progress.

This past April, the Government of Saskatchewan committed an additional $500,000 to several non-profit groups engaged in source water protection initiatives. This brings total funding grants available through the Watershed Authority to $820,000. Grants are available to non-profit groups that are leading implementation of source water protection plans. To date, seven plans have been completed within the province, with four more currently underway.

The Assiniboine River Watershed Source Water Protection Plan and the Yorkton Area Aquifers Source Water Protection Plan are available online at www.swa.ca.
