Families staying at a low-cost housing facility in Saskatoon operated by Central Urban Métis Federation Incorporated (CUMFI) will benefit from a one-time provincial government computer donation.
The donation was announced today by Minister responsible for Information Technology Office Dan D'Autremont and Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer.
Refurbished computer hardware no longer required by government ministries will be installed in 12 units in a newly opened affordable housing facility and in three emergency housing units in Saskatoon's Pleasant Hill area. The hardware provided will be in good working condition, and all computer hard drives will be erased to prevent the accidental loss of sensitive or private information.
"This program will provide at-risk women and children an opportunity to benefit from today's computer technology during their stay at the facility," D'Autremont said. "The initiative also supports our government's efforts to reduce its own environmental footprint, which is good for all Saskatchewan people."
"These computers provide the families in this CUMFI house the opportunity to become more self sufficient," Harpauer said. "This is just one small way the government can help remove barriers and enrich lives in a healthy community environment."
CUMFI is a community based Métis owned and operated non-profit, charitable organization located in the city of Saskatoon. CUMFI is a leader locally, provincially and nationally in the area of urban Aboriginal issues and challenges.
