Homeless men in Lloydminster will have better access to emergency housing with the announcement today of more than $61,000 in additional operational funding from the province for the city's men's shelter.
The 28-bed facility opened in March 2008, and is managed by the Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society. The funding will help pay for Saskatchewan people who stayed at the facility during the last fiscal year. Nearly $27,000 had already been provided to the shelter for 2008-09, bringing the province's total operational contribution for last year to more than $88,000.
"Like other cities across Saskatchewan, Lloydminster is growing, benefiting from increased employment and economic activity," Lloydminster MLA Tim McMillan said, on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer. "By providing support on behalf of individuals who access the Lloydminster Men's Shelter, our government is helping to support homeless Saskatchewan men through the provision of emergency housing, until they can find permanent accommodation in a tight rental market."
"We're extremely pleased that the Government of Saskatchewan is helping to support all of the important work that we do at the Lloydminster Men's Shelter," Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society President Phyllis Tomkins said. "This significant contribution to the shelter's budget will enable us to provide clients with the same level of service, regardless of whether they originate from the Saskatchewan or Alberta side of the border."
The Province of Alberta also provides the shelter with funding. Future annual funding from Saskatchewan will again be based largely on usage of the facility by Saskatchewan people. The Ministry of Social Services has committed to review the funding arrangement yearly to ensure it remains equitable.
