Tonight, Yorkton welcomes the Regina Symphony Orchestra (RSO) for a concert of classical music on the third stop of the RSO "Music on the Road" centennial tour. The concert will be held on Thursday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Anne Portnuff Theatre at Yorkton Regional High School.
The Regina Symphony is the first recipient of funding from the Building Pride program, which was announced in January 2009. The orchestra is receiving $200,000 for a Centennial Tour of three southern Saskatchewan cities. Besides bringing the opportunity of attending a live symphony performance to people in smaller centres and surrounding areas, it is hoped the tour will build audiences for orchestral music around the province.
"I am pleased we've been able to make it possible for the RSO to take their show on the road in their centennial year," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "The RSO is the first recipient of funding under the Building Pride pilot program and a great way to start what I hope will be a dynamic program of sharing what is unique about this province."
In addition to tonight's final performance, the RSO played two earlier concerts in Swift Current and Estevan.
"Yorkton is excited to welcome the RSO," Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said. "This performance will be an inspiration for aspiring young musicians and a joyous evening for everyone who loves to hear orchestral music played live."
The RSO will perform its popular "The Oscars" Concert with music from Academy Award nominated films. They are encouraging people to come to the concert dressed as their favourite movie star or character, or "red carpet" glamorous.
