The provincial government is keeping its commitment to make Saskatchewan communities safer with the addition of two new police positions for Yorkton.
These two police positions will be based in Yorkton, operating under the city's municipal policing agreement with the RCMP. It is expected the addition of two officers will provide relief for Yorkton police to address the high volume of caseloads and meet the demands of the city's growing population.
"Keeping communities free of violent crime is a top priority for our government," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister Darryl Hickie said. "The addition of these two new officers as part of 30 new police positions this budget year brings us halfway to our goal of 120 new police officers over four years."
In addition to the two positions in Yorkton, twelve officers will be split evenly in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. The remaining 16 positions have been allocated to the RCMP. The RCMP will receive $3.8 million to support its National Back-up Policy that provides back-up to RCMP officers working in remote locations.
"With the economic growth we are experiencing in Yorkton, also comes challenges," Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said. "This proactive investment for two police officers will help address the community needs and reflects our government's mandate to keep our citizens safe."
