An affordable rental housing project for families has been approved for the Yorkton Parkland Housing Society (YPHS) under the Province's Rental Development Program.
"This housing project is an exciting addition to the community of Yorkton," Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer. "The construction of these new rental units means that low-income citizens will have more safe and affordable housing options. It also means more opportunities for families to build a brighter future for themselves and contribute to building a lasting and sustainable community."
"We are excited for the new project which will help us with our growing waiting list to provide safe affordable housing that is much needed in Yorkton," Yorkton Parkland Housing Society Manager George Cote said. "We would like to thank Saskatchewan Housing Corporation for assisting in making this a reality."
The total cost of the 24-unit project is estimated to be approximately $5 million. Of this amount, the province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, has committed approximately $3.2 million. The balance of the funding (approximately $1.8 million) will be provided by Yorkton Parkland Housing Society.
The affordable housing project will consist of the new construction of three eight-unit (two-storey) apartment buildings, each containing four two-bedroom and four three-bedroom units. One of the two-bedroom units in each building will be designated for persons with disabilities. The project will be located at 31 Duncan Street West, a residential neighbourhood close to schools and services.
YPHS is a non-profit organization incorporated since 1978. It administers 131 housing units as part of its mandate to improve the housing conditions of low-income people in the Yorkton Parkland Region. YPHS membership consists of six member bands in the Yorkton Tribal Council.
The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation's Rental Development Program provides one-time capital assistance to increase the supply of off-reserve affordable housing that is priced at or below average market rent for comparable housing in that area.
