BUYERS SOUGHT FOR MEAT PROCESSING PLANT

Released on April 14, 2009

The Government of Saskatchewan is expanding its efforts to sell the assets of Thomson Meats Ltd., a meat processing facility located in Melfort.

Thomson Meats Ltd. produces its own brand and lines of processed and packaged meat products. It also provides toll processing services and products to other firms.

The Ministry of Agriculture is soliciting interest in the sale of Thomson Meats Ltd. through a combination of public advertising and direct contact with potential buyers.

"We believe that government has no role in owning a meat processing plant," Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said. "Our role is to create an environment for business to succeed."

The facility will continue to operate while a potential buyer is sought. As the company's sole shareholder, the Government is seeking proposals to purchase the company's assets and operation on a going concern basis. To be considered, proposals must be submitted in writing to the Ministry of Agriculture no later than noon on June 1, 2009.
