NORTH SASKATCHEWAN RIVER WATERSHED SOURCE WATER PROTECTION PLAN COMPLETED

Released on September 29, 2008

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority and the North Saskatchewan River Basin Council officially released Saskatchewan's seventh source water protection plan today.

"Our provincial source water protection planning program is a direct result of the findings in the North Battleford water inquiry," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Nancy Heppner said. "We're very pleased that this plan is now complete and ready to be put into action. Today marks a significant step forward in protecting our water within this watershed, and everyone who helped develop it should be proud of what they have achieved."

The North Saskatchewan River Watershed Source Water Protection Plan was released by Randy Weekes, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Biggar, at a ceremony held today on Finlayson Island, just outside North Battleford. The plan was developed by local residents, who have now formed the North Saskatchewan River Basin Council.

"We've been working to develop this plan for over four years now, and I simply can't say enough about the dedication shown by the many committee volunteers and technical experts that helped out along the way," North Saskatchewan River Basin council chair Murray Ball said. "Working together, we've managed to hammer out a practical plan to ensure water quality and availability for all of us living in the watershed, now and into the future."

The council will oversee the implementation of the plan throughout the entire North Saskatchewan River watershed, an area that covers approximately 41,000 km², reaching from the Alberta-Saskatchewan border to the river's confluence with the South Saskatchewan River at "The Forks", east of Prince Albert. The watershed has a total population of more than 116,000 people and includes 51 rural municipalities, 29 First Nations with lands and 17 Indian Reserves, 100 towns and villages, and the Cities of Lloydminster, North Battleford and Prince Albert.

The development of source water protection plans is a priority of the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority, which has a mandate to manage and protect the quality and quantity of the province's water supplies.
