A message of world peace will echo throughout the Saskatchewan communities of Langenburg, Churchbridge, Yorkton, Canora, Buchanan, Rama, Invermay, Wadena, Quill Lake, Watson, Saskatoon, Swift Current and Maple Creek during World Harmony Week held September 28 to October 1. Residents of these communities will welcome the Canadian World Harmony Run team on the Saskatchewan leg of this nationwide journey.
"Saskatchewan is very proud to celebrate World Harmony Week," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Despite our differences, we share this world and we should do our best to promote peace, harmony and goodwill."
The World Harmony Run is a global relay, founded in 1987, that seeks to promote international friendship and understanding. Runners carry a flaming torch, a symbol of harmony, and pass it from community to community. Over 102 nations worldwide participate in this event. The Canadian team is comprised of 20 international runners who began their leg of the journey on September 1, 2008, from Cape Spear, Newfoundland. They will travel approximately 7,600 kilometres and arrive in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, on September 28.
On September 30 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., participants will unite together in Saskatoon, starting at the First Nations University of Canada and ending at the Rotary Park Peace Pole.
